CID's predecessor delivered Oi Manawa, the Canterbury Earthquake National Memorial, on the banks of the Ōtākaro Avon River.
Oi Manawa means tremor or quiver of the heart. The memorial commemorates the 185 people who lost their lives in the 22 February 2011 earthquake, and acknowledges those who were injured and those who took part in the rescue and recovery.
It was opened on 22 February 2017, the sixth anniversary.
The memorial takes the form of a curved marble wall following the line of the river, inscribed with the names of those who died, alongside a shaded gathering space on the opposite bank for reflection and remembrance.
Of all the Anchor Projects, this one carried a particular weight. The design process involved extensive consultation with bereaved families, and the delivery had to honour that. It is now a permanent part of Te Papa Ōtākaro / Avon River Precinct.
